Think of your body as having to deal with irritants on a constant – day to day basis. If you are in great health, you can deal with a few irritants easily. If you are under stress, the irritants become stressors in themselves. By finding ways to reduce these irritants, you can significantly enhance your immune reactions – allowing the body to react and heal as it was designed to do.

Tip 1 – Clean your sinuses. Well, you clean your hands and you brush your teeth – but have you cleaned your sinuses today? Our sinuses are 4 paired cavities inside the skull with a very big job. As we inhale air, the sinuses act as filters, taking out the pollutants in the air such as pollen, dust, germs, etc. they also humidify the air so that by the time it gets to the lungs, the air is ready to be exposed to the membranes that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. If you use a vacuum cleaner with a bag, think of the sinuses as that bag. Now just think how much junk they accumulate in a day.

Well functioning sinuses are one of our best defenses against cold and flu viruses, so we want to have then performing at tip top capacity. One way of doing that is by using a neti pot. These typically look like little Aladin’s lamps and are filled with water and a pinch of salt – then the water is allowed to run through the sinuses and out into the sink. It really is easy, and it works well.

Tip 2 – Clean your hair. Just imagine through the day how many particles of dust, dirt and pollutants sticks to your hair (and yes, this includes eye brows and facial hair such as mustaches or beards). If you do not wash your hair before going to bed, the accumulation of the day will, by force of gravity, fall to your pillow. I don’t know about you, but my face is turning all over that pillow through the night. So the simple effort to clean your hair before bedtime will prevent your eyes, nose and mouth from taking in those pollutants for 8 hours or so that you sleep.

Tip 3 – Clean your bedroom. Sound like something your mother would tell you? Remember the hours of sleep are the most effective portions of the healing cycle. If you add irritants to your bedroom, it is like trying to clean a car in a sand storm. First, make sure your mattress and pillows are clean and fresh. It is surprising how many people will sleep on 10 year old pillows where the stuffing comes out as dust. Second, check to make sure the fabrics in the room are not accumulating and holding lint, pollen, dead skin cells, etc. And last – try a good filter to keep the air in the bedroom extra clean. You will be amazed at what a difference this can make.

If it seems that there is wide variety in type and quality of medical school in the United States – well, that is nothing compared to the variety in type and quality that can be found from foreign institutions. International medical schools are created for a large variety of reasons, most with the best of intentions, but the schools themselves differ greatly from one and other. For American students, one difference stands above all the rest: Which of these schools will create an opportunity for its students to practice medicine in the United States? Which of these schools have the approval and accreditation necessary for its students to be recognized by American medical boards?

The fact of the matter is that many foreign institutions are much lower quality compared to their US counterparts. Many of these schools simply do not have the resources or facilities to hire quality faculty and offer the same type of education that most students would receive from an American medical school. It costs money to provide the quality of training necessary for doctors. Unfortunately, not all schools have the financial backing to reach that level of training. It should be noted that there is also a sect of foreign medical schools whose mission is purely to produce profits. These schools operate primarily as “degree mills” – with low standards of admissions, providing a low quality and easy level of education to the point that a degree from these institutions means absolutely nothing. These schools often make big promises to their students on accomplishing their dreams with a degree, but usually fail to deliver.

All that said, many foreign medical schools offer terrific opportunities. Many are well funded with high quality faculty and facilities. They are often cheaper than many American institutions – which can charge over $50,000 per year for tuition. These schools can also offer more opportunity for potential American students. US schools have limited seats in each class. Every year, many qualified students are turned away based solely upon lack of available slots. Foreign schools can help pick up the slack for these applicants. They also give the student an opportunity to experience another country and culture while obtaining their education – which can provide huge benefits both to a student’s future resume and to their person in general.

For any potential applicant who is interested in obtaining an education abroad, but being a doctor in the United States, the key is to find a school that has been approved or accredited by a US legislative body. Specifically, there are three states that should be looked at: California, Florida, and New York. These three states do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to approvals and accreditations. In fact, most other states use the findings of one of these states for their own decisions. For example, a school that is approved by California is automatically also approved by Kansas, et al.

The advantage of going to a foreign school that has approval and/or accreditation is that the student knows that it has been thoroughly vetted. These states are not only putting their own reputations on the line, but also the lives of their citizens in the hands of doctors from schools they have approved. As such, accreditation is extremely difficult to obtain. In addition, an approved school also creates competition for that state’s own institutions. So it speaks volumes for any school that has reached the level of approval and accreditation.

When we set out to lose weight, we often have to consider a number of variables. How much weight do we wish to lose, what kind of exercise we wish to begin doing, what kind of diet we are going to adopt. With so many options out there this decision making process can become a little overwhelming, with the result being our almost haphazardly choosing whatever method presents itself with the best marketing. However, when it comes to our bodies, the better our understanding of our physiology the better the chances of our diet succeeding. Thus one of the key questions becomes how large a caloric deficit should we set? Should we eat just a little less, a moderate amount less, or tons less on a daily basis? What are the pros and cons of each approach? Is there one method that is much better than the others? In today’s article we are going to take a closer look at this question, and seek to guide you correctly so that you can optimize your diet successes.

First, let’s establish a few basics so that this can be a meaningful conversation . We should be clear that when we mean setting a caloric deficit we mean that you can achieve this through either exercise or cutting back on how much you consume. While these are different and have different effects on your body, for this article we are going to strive for simplicity. Further, when we say small, medium, or large deficits we mean that you are reducing your maintenance caloric needs by either ten to fifteen percent, twenty to twenty five percent, or anything greater than twenty five percent. Clear?

So, let’s take a look. Setting a 10% deficit will result in gradual weight loss of usually about a pound a week for guys to half a pound for women. The loss will be slight enough that the body won’t react with any defense mechanisms, but the deficit is small enough that you need to be really meticulous about recording how much you eat. Moderate deficits will generate quicker losses, but the body will begin to fight the weight loss by slowing down your metabolism and seeking to horde fat, which will make it tougher. Extreme losses will take much less time, but will cause your metabolism to go haywire, and you will need to eat pretty much protein the whole time to ensure you don’t lose too much muscle.
