I don’t know about you, but every now and again, I tend to get a bit down in the dumps. It’s nothing really that serious, and not something I can even put my finger on, but suffice it to say that I feel suitably sorry for myself and find it hard to drag myself into the simple act of normal every day life. I suppose it is a normal part of existing in the fast paced climate of today’s world. It can be hard to juggle all the responsibilities that are thrust upon you from every angle: cooking, cleaning, looking after children, work issues, and social life, all constantly dragging at you until you feel utterly despairing.

My friend had suggested that I get to one of the gyms in my area, and I looked at her as if she had ten heads. As if I didn’t have enough on my over-flowing plate already! But it was a trip that was to make a big difference in my life, and which I now thank her for on a regular basis. My initial thoughts were that I would be pushed into doing some horrific exercise plan that would leave me even further mentally and physically exhausted. On entering one of the gyms that she chose, I was immediately struck by the relaxed and easy demeanour of the staff, and the great general atmosphere.

An appointment with an instructor had me sitting down in front of some poor girl as I poured out my problems, practically in tears. I think she felt genuinely sorry for me and was incredibly sympathetic. The first thing we discussed was my diet, which was sadly lacking in nutritious and health giving elements. Writing out an eating plan, and advising me to steer away from the high fat, high sugar content foods, she suggested I try to stick to fresh, unadulterated foods that I could steam or grill.

As time progressed, we upped the challenge. She never once berated me for not completing a fitness work out, saying that I should only try to do what I felt mentally and physically capable of achieving. This was a major step forward for me, as I always tended to beat my self up about hitting targets; but she said I should only do what I felt comfortable with. We had a bit of a giggle too, gossiping about our respective partners, and she showed me that the simple act of smiling really does help to instil a positive outlook at the forefront of your mind. We worked on my posture, which had become disastrously slumped over the years,and within minutes, I was standing almost six inches taller, immediately making me feel better about myself. The very act of moving caused oxygen filled blood to circulate my system and had my heart pumping in renewed vigour.
